Formation of Oxidized Gases and Secondary Organic Aerosol from a Commercial Oxidant-Generating Electronic Air Cleaner

چکیده
The COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for indoor air cleaners. While some commercial electronic cleaners can be effective in reducing primary pollutants and inactivating bioaerosol, studies on formation of secondary products from oxidation chemistry during their use are limited. Here, we measured oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) chemical composition particles generated a hydroxyl radical generator an office. During operation, enhancements OVOCs, especially low-molecular-weight acids, were detected. Rapid increases particle number mass concentrations observed, corresponding to highly oxidized aerosol (SOA) (O:C ∼ 1.3), with enhanced signal at m/z 44 (CO2+) spectra. These results suggest that acids VOC contributed nucleation SOA formation. Nitrate, sulfate, chloride also without increase ammonium, suggesting nitrate, As species reported have detrimental health effects, further should not limited inactivation bioaerosol or reduction particular VOCs, but evaluate potential OVOCs different environments.

متن کاملSecondary organic aerosol formation from isoprene photooxidation.
Recent work has shown that the atmospheric oxidation of isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, C5H8) leads to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In this study, the mechanism of SOA formation by isoprene photooxidation is comprehensively investigated, by measurements of SOA yields over a range of experimental conditions, namely isoprene and NOx concentrations. Hydrogen peroxide is used...
متن کاملA review of Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) formation from isoprene
Recent field and laboratory evidence indicates that the oxidation of isoprene, (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, C5H8) forms secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Global biogenic emissions of isoprene (600 Tg yr−1) are sufficiently large that the formation of SOA in even small yields results in substantial production of atmospheric particulate matter, likely having implications for air quality and climate. H...
